Fishing Shirts!

We have been trying to get the boys out a little more lately, so it won't be such a shock when they go back to school. Nick had taken Conner to Kohls the other day, where Conner had found some fishing shirts that he absolutely had to have! He took a picture of the shirts and showed me when he got home, so I ordered them that night. We went to pick them up today and the boys (especially Conner) were pretty excited!

Bank!

Today I took the boys to the bank to get them their very own checking account so they had somewhere to put all their money (besides in their piggy bank!) They were very excited because they got their very own debit cards!!!

Supposed to be...

Today was supposed to be our first day of school, but the storm has delayed the start of our school year by 3 weeks. So, today the boys enjoyed lunch and a movie at home!

Peace...

Chaos... fielding calls and visits from roofers, siding companies, contractors, waiting for our insurance adjustor, getting estimates for our car damage, trying to decide what to do about school, whether the boys can have success with this hybrid model of every other day school, finding out that when they are home they will be expected to log in and follow their normal school day schedule by themselves, trying to decide if I can go back to work or if I need to stay home when the boys are home...

Peace...out on the lake, in the sunshine, laughing...

We had to choose peace today, just for a few hours...

Lunch...

One of the big bushes in our front yard was badly damaged, so we took care of that this morning and trimmed some branches on our little tree. We all decided that we needed Dairy Queen for lunch because, well, why not...

We were helping at my aunt's house again this morning! We took a couple photos on our way home of buildings that lost roofs!

We headed over to my Aunt Peg's house this morning to help with some tree clean up from the storm.

No Power...

We had power for a while yesterday, but we lost it again today. We have now thrown away all of our food! I had two lego sets that I purchased a while back and the boys opted to put those together today. There was enough sunshine streaming into the kitchen that they were able to spend the afternoon building. We were able to get our roof patched today, so hopefully if it rains again, we won't have anymore leaks!

Damage...

We are making phone calls about house repairs and waiting to hear from our insurance adjustor so we thought we could at least take care of the broken hoop today!

I found this video of the damage in our town...

Derecho.

Well... we will always remember today as the day that Iowa had its very own hurricane... On August 10, 2020 (in the midst of a pandemic and changing back to school plans) we got hit with a derecho which is basically a really strong wind storm. Wind speeds through our area were as high as 140 mph. I have never experienced a natural disaster of this magnitude in my life.  I had seen reports from Des Moines of a wind storm heading our way and my dad and brother had texted me to warn of the impending storm. When the wind began to blow, the sirens started, and the power went out shortly thereafter. The boys and I went downstairs and listened in the dark as debris pounded against our house. It seemed to last forever, but after about 40 minutes, we headed upstairs to take a look. It was still raining but we stepped outside to see our basketball hoop laying on our driveway, our yard was covered with roof shingles, and many neighboring trees had simply been pulled out of the ground and deposited in surrounding yards. We were lucky. Our home kept us safe. We will need a new roof, new siding (we have about a dozen holes in the siding), and will have to have some water damage taken care of in our garage and both of the boys' bedrooms, but we can fix those things. I took tons of pictures of our damage, but here are a few. Nick's car was damaged while he was at work as well. There have been hundreds of pictures of damage from our town so I chose a couple to put on here. The vastness of the damage is unbelievable. Almost every home has damage in our city. Streets are impassable because of downed trees, and no one has electricity, internet, or even cell phone service. Today was a scary day, but we are safe...

It is devastating to see houses and trees like this...

Tonight Nick and I sat outside for hours, just talking and looking at the sky. I have never seen a more beautiful sky! Stars everywhere, no city lights, just us... under the stars. After such a trying day, it was an amazing way to end it!

Caramel Corn!

Nick is absolutely loving his Blackstone, so he decided to make caramel corn on it tonight! First attempt was a learning experience, but the second batch was pretty good! He will work on perfecting it!

And More Fishing...

Fishing is definitely one of our favorite things to do, especially since we still can't do much else right now! It was a gorgeous day so we headed out to Palo and enjoyed the day. Ben caught 4 fish and Nick caught 2, so it was definitely a successful fishing trip!

Success!

I had to work for a couple of hours this morning, so we used this as a little trial run for how the boys will do once school starts and they are home alone. I left some assignments for them to complete and when I got home, the work was done! They did a fabulous job! I was very relieved and they definitely earned themselves a little treat, so we got lunch and frostys and they watched a movie while we enjoyed our lunch! Once school starts, they will be home every other day by themselves for the most part, so this was a good test run!
